A method derived from REI theory

The Mystery of Dyslexia Unraveled

Today the written word is at the centre of life more than ever before. For some — even highly intelligent people — reading remains an insurmountable obstacle. Based on the REI theory presented in [psi], Eros developed a simple method to eliminate dyslexia. It is offered here for free.

There are many theories about dyslexia, but to date none have explained it in a way that makes it possible to eliminate it completely. Having understood the new REI theory, I was able to obtain insight into this disorder and develop a simple method that I then used to help a dyslexic child. There is a patent pending on this method, but because I believe it should be available to everyone, I'm offering it here for free.

REI in one minute

Reason

The logical-analytical mind. The only mind we are aware of. Composes words from individual letters.

Emotion

Thinks in pictures. Captures whole words as visual symbols connected to mental images.

Instinct

Thinks with sensations and fears. Operates beneath our awareness.

Dyslexia in the REI theory

Only one of the three minds is naturally suited to reading by assembling individual letters into words: Reason. In some people, reading is taken over by Emotion, who operates completely differently — and that disorder is what we call dyslexia.

When Emotion reads, he doesn't compose words from letters. He takes in whole words, or their roots, as individual symbols, and connects them to pictures in his memory. This requires him to remember several thousand very similar pictures instead of just twenty-six letters.

A typical early dyslexic reading:

Original sentence:

"John is eating bananas."

First read by Emotion (only recognised roots):

"John is eat banana."

Then corrected by ear:

"John is eating a banana."

Because Emotion compares pictures, he can also confuse visually similar letter groups (big ↔ dig, dog ↔ bog) or substitute words with similar meanings (father ↔ daddy, yard ↔ playground).

There's nothing wrong with dyslexics at all — they merely use a less appropriate mental processor for reading.

Early signs of true dyslexia

According to REI, dyslexia refers only to cases where readers use Emotion instead of Reason. These are the typical early mistakes:

  • Frequently mixing up the order of letters
  • Letter reversal (d ↔ b)
  • Disregarding prefixes and endings
  • Guessing the meaning of unrecognised words
  • Mixing up words with synonyms
  • Seeming disorientation between words and lines
  • Taking in a large part of the text at a glance (preview)
  • Slower reading progress compared to peers

Eros' method — the core idea

Transfer the reading function from Emotion to Reason — by introducing a second symbol for every letter, so Emotion can no longer memorise words as pictures.

Each letter receives a numeric twin:

A, a = 1

B, b = 2

C, c = 3

D, d = 4

E, e = 5

F, f = 6

G, g = 7

H, h = 8

I, i = 9

J, j = 10

K, k = 11

L, l = 12

M, m = 13

N, n = 14

O, o = 15

P, p = 16

Q, q = 17

R, r = 18

S, s = 19

T, t = 20

U, u = 21

V, v = 22

W, w = 23

X, x = 24

Y, y = 25

Z, z = 26

The same word, three different pictures:

Picture 1: rider

Picture 2: r9d5r

Picture 3: 18i4e18

For Emotion this becomes an unsolvable task — instead of a few thousand word-pictures, he would need to remember hundreds of thousands. The reader is forced to use Reason.

The seven stages of the method

Stages aren't chronologically delineated — move on once the goal of each is achieved. Recommended under the supervision of an adult, one hour every day.

  1. Learning double symbols Master the mapping between letters and numbers until each is recognised without faltering.
  2. Strengthening knowledge of symbols Read randomly arranged letters and numbers within seven minutes — accuracy and speed combined.
  3. Adding up letters Convert each letter into its number value and sum the word — proves reading is composing, not picture-matching.
  4. Identifying the meaning of words Recognise meaning of words written in double symbols, blocking Emotion from memorising single pictures.
  5. Reading texts with double symbols The core stage. Daily one-hour reading of adapted texts until Reason takes over the reading function entirely.
  6. Reading nonsense words Emotion can't connect these to any picture — bridges the way to normal text.
  7. Improving reading single symbols Return to normal letters with Reason firmly in charge. Dyslexia-related problems no longer occur.

When does it make sense to use the method?

Best time

As early as possible — before Emotion has made significant progress with his reading method. Also suitable for older readers in whom Emotion has failed entirely and who remained illiterate.

What it requires

Approximately one hour of practice every day for several months, under the supervision of an adult. While doing the exercises the dyslexic should not read other, normal texts.
